Summary

Photograph of 4-REP unit at Eastleigh Works in 1973. These units had a lifespan of 26 years, serving from 1966 to 1992. The short lifespan of these units was due to the fact that although the driving motor coaches were new build, being built from 1966 to 1967 and then in 1974, the intermediate trailer coaches were converted from Mark 1 coaching stock built in the early 1950s, meaning that these trains were due for replacement by the early 1990s. Replacement of these trains began in 1988 and was complete by 1992.
