Summary

The State Flag of Greece between 1858 and 1862 as specified in a decree dated 28 August 1858, signed by Queen Amalia on behalf of King Otto. The decree (which can be found here) replaced the older decree dated 3 June 1833 (which can be found here). The flag remained in use until King Otto was overthrown and the shield was removed.

Changes made to the design by the 1858 decree:

  • Ensign proportions changed from 18:25 to 2:3.
  • State flag proportions changed from 7:10 to 2:3.
  • The crown is specified as fitting having the same height and width as the height of one band on the ensign (i.e. 1/9 the height of the flag).
