Longridge Town Football Club are an English football club based at the Mike Riding Ground in Longridge, Lancashire. They were established in 1996 and currently play in the West Lancashire Football League. They are full members of the Lancashire County Football Association.

History

The football club was formed in 1996 when the two main clubs in the town, Longridge United and Longridge St. Wilfred’s amalgamated to give a single club with the ultimate aim of bringing a higher standard of football to the town.[1]

Although Longridge Town football club has only been in existence since 1996, the two clubs from which it was formed have histories which can be traced back to the 19th century when two clubs Longridge St. Wilfred’s and Longridge St. Lawrence were first formed.

Both of these clubs were based on sectarian grounds and played in their respective religious leagues.

This situation existed until 1929 when Longridge St. Lawrence became a non-sectarian club and changed its name to Longridge United.

In 1996 Longridge United and Longridge St. Wilfred’s amalgamated to give a single club which is still the situation today.

The club initially played in the Preston & District League (Mid Lancashire Football League), winning the Third Division title in 2003-4, en route to their rise to the Premier Division.

Following a third placed finish in 2007-08, and a victorious campaign under the leadership of Stuart Darley in 2008-09 the club’s application to join the West Lancashire League Second Division was successful.

In only their first season in the league, the club were promoted to the First Division at the end of the 2009-10 season, as runners-up to BAC/EE Springfields.

And in 2011-12 the club enjoyed their most successful season so far when they won the First Division title from Crooklands Casuals and scored 91 goals in the process to be crowned champions under the guidance of Anthony Keefe.[2]

Lee Ashcroft was appointed manager in the summer of 2014, as a hope to progress the club onwards and upwards from its lackluster 2013-14 season.[3]

Lee Ashcroft isn't the only ex-PNE star to have joined the club recently, the manager himself managed to persuade Paul McKenna to join the club as a player/coach.[4]

Most recently the club has retained its place within the West Lancashire League Premier Division with high finishes, and are pushing for promotion into the North West Counties.

Stadium

The Recreation Ground

Longridge originally played its home matches on a pitch just off Kestor Lane in Longridge. The club were based here throughout there history, until seeking a new venue to comply with West Lancashire League requirements. The last season to be competed at The Recreation Ground was the title winning season of 2008-09. Longridge ended that season with a win and an abundance of celebrations. The ground is still used today, and is now home to the junior branch of the club.

The Mike Riding Ground

Longridge moved to The Mike Riding Ground in time for their opening home fixture of the following 2008-09 West Lancashire League season.[5] The Mike Riding Ground is still under development to maintain standards required for the higher league. Since completing the move to the scenic area, the club have pressed on with have a stand built along with floodlighting. Next on the agenda will be fencing and turnstiles to ensure league ground grading requirements are met for the North West Counties League.
