The blackchin shiner (Notropis heterodon) is a North American species of freshwater cyprinid fish. It is a small fish, about 6 cm long, and its range reaches from southern Quebec and from Vermont to Minnesota and Iowa. It chiefly occurs in the Great Lakes and upper Mississippi River drainages.

Description

The blackchin shiner has a continuous lateral stripe, blunt head, and small mouth. The dorsal fin lies behind the middle of the body, similar to the anal fin. The blackchin shiner comes in shades of brown to nearly black dorsally, while also having a golden section separating the dorsal coloring from the midlateral stripe. The underbelly is a pale shade, and the fins are transparent. The maximum length of the species is about 9 cm.
