Eastern Ontario is a region of Southern Ontario approximately 35,296 km2 (13,628 sq mi) with an extended area of around 7,028 km2 (2,714 sq mi). The region is home to approximately 1,647,000 people²⁰⁰⁴ and comprises several census divisions ("counties"): Prescott and Russell, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, Leeds and Grenville, Ottawa, Lanark, Renfrew and Frontenac. The National Capital Region is an official federal designation for the Canadian capital of Ottawa, the neighbouring city of Gatineau, Quebec, and the surrounding area.

60% of Eastern Ontarians live in the City of Ottawa. Other major cities (40,000+) in the region include Kingston and Cornwall. Major towns under 40,000 people include Pembroke, Rockland, Hawkesbury, Smiths Falls, Carleton Place, Renfrew, Arnprior, Embrun and Perth.

The Thousand Islands is the name of an archipelago of islands that straddle the Canada-U.S. border in the Saint Lawrence River as it emerges from the northeast corner of Lake Ontario. They stretch for about 50 miles (80 km) downstream (Northeast) from Kingston. The Laurentian Highlands, which form a small section of the extensive Canadian Shield, cuts through the western section from the Upper Ottawa River valley southeast toward to the Saint Lawrence River around Gananoque. The eastern section of Eastern Ontario, that is east and south-east of Ottawa, is generally a flat plain. Along the extreme western edge of Eastern Ontario are a continuation of the Laurentian Highlands, known as the Opeongo Hills, and they contain some of the highest elevations in Southern Ontario. They stretch into the northern portions of Central Ontario, near Algonquin Provincial Park. Ottawa itself is at the confluence of the Rideau River and Ottawa River.

Embrun (ˈɛmbrən in English; French pronunciation: ​[ɑ̃bʁœ̃]), UN/LOCODE: CA EBU, is a community in the Canadian province of Ontario in the Eastern Ontario region. Embrun is also part of the National Capital Region. Embrun is part of the larger Russell Township in Prescott and Russell United Counties. With a population of 8,048 (entire town) or 5,655 (urban area), it is the largest community in Russell Township. Embrun is largely (but not exclusively) francophone. The urban area grew by 26.6% from 2001 to 2006

The community is located approximately a twenty-five minute drive from Ottawa, an hour and a half from Montreal, and a five hour drive from Toronto. Embrun is located near Trans-Canada Highway 417. Politically, the community is situated in the electoral district of Glengarry—Prescott—Russell both provincially and federally.

Paul Joseph James Martin, PC, CC, QC (June 23, 1903 – September 14, 1992), often referred to as Paul Martin, Sr, was a noted Canadian politician. He was the father of Paul Martin (Jr.), who served as Prime Minister of Canada from 2003 - 2006. Martin was born in Ottawa, the son of Lumina (née Chouinard) and Joseph Philippe Ernest Martin. He was raised in Pembroke in the Ottawa Valley. He completed his university education at the University of Toronto, and earned his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. They stretch for about 50 miles (80 km) downstream from Kingston, Ontario. The Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario. The U.S. islands are in the state of New York. The islands, which number 1,793 in all, range in size from over 40 square miles (100 km²) to smaller islands occupied by a single residence, to even smaller uninhabited outcroppings of rocks that are home to migratory waterfowl.
