 Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (born March 28, 1986), better known by her stage name Lady Gaga, is an American pop singer-songwriter. After enrolling at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2003 and later performing in the rock music scene of New York City's Lower East Side, she signed with Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. During her early time at Interscope, she worked as a songwriter for fellow label artists and captured the attention of recording artist Akon who, recognizing her vocal abilities, signed her to his own label, KonLive Distribution. Gaga rose to prominence with her debut album The Fame (2008), a critical and commercial success which produced global chart-topping singles such as "Just Dance" and "Poker Face". A follow-up EP, The Fame Monster (2009), was met with a similar reception and released the successful singles "Bad Romance", "Telephone", and "Alejandro". Her second full-length album Born This Way was released in 2011, topping the charts in more than 20 countries, including the United States, where it sold over one million copies in its first week. The album produced number one single "Born This Way". Her third album Artpop, released in 2013, topped the US charts and included the successful singles "Applause" and "Do What U Want". In 2014, Gaga released a collaborative jazz album with Tony Bennett titled Cheek to Cheek, which became her third consecutive number one in the United States. It was Gaga's first concert tour which helped promote her debut studio album The Fame. North American shows began in March, followed by dates in Oceania and a solo trek through Europe. Dates in Asia soon followed, as well as two performances at England's V Festival and two shows in North America that had been postponed from April. Gaga described the tour as a traveling museum show incorporating artist Andy Warhol's pop-performance art concept. Tickets were distributed for charity also. Alternate versions of the show with minimal variations were planned by Gaga to accommodate different venues. The show consisted of four segments, with each segment being followed by a video interlude to the next segment, and it ended with an encore. The set list consisted of songs from her debut album only. Gaga appeared on the stage in new costumes including an innovative dress made entirely of bubbles and premiered an unreleased song called "Future Love". The show has received positive critical appreciation with critics complimenting her vocal clarity and fashion sense as well as her ability to pull off theatrics like a professional artist. It was released on May 23, 2011 by Interscope Records as a follow up to her internationally successful debut, The Fame (2008) and the extended play The Fame Monster (2009). Gaga wrote or co-wrote all the songs, as well as being the co-producer of every track in the album. In Born This Way, Gaga collaborated with numerous producers, such as DJ Snake, DJ White Shadow, Jeppe Laursen, RedOne, Fernando Garibay, Robert John "Mutt" Lange and Clinton Sparks. Furthermore, Gaga collaborated with artists such as the E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons and Queen guitarist Brian May on tracks from the album. The music of Born This Way is rooted in the synthpop, electropop and dance-pop-oriented styles of her previous albums, yet also incorporates a broader range of elements of several musical genres such as opera, heavy metal, disco, and rock and roll. The topics for the songs range from sexuality, religion, freedom, feminism, and individualism. Despite being scrutinized by some religious and conservative commentators, the album was well-received by music critics. The album was an international success, debuting on the top five spots in every major market, including the Billboard 200. In the United States, Born This Way sold 1.108 million copies in its first week, the largest first week album sales in five years. As of September 2011, worldwide sales of Born This Way exceed 8 million copies. Thus far, four singles have been released for the album: "Born This Way", "Judas", "The Edge of Glory", and "Yoü and I" went on to chart on the top ten spots of the Billboard Hot 100. Gaga has performed songs on the album on different occasions, including at prominent award ceremonies including the 53rd Grammy Awards and the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, as well as in other events and television appearances. It is the lead single from her second studio album, The Fame Monster. The track was produced by RedOne and was inspired by the paranoia that she had felt while touring through the previous year. After the demo version of the song leaked, Gaga premiered the song at Alexander McQueen's Spring/Summer 2010 Paris Fashion Week show on October 6, 2009, followed by the release of the cover art. Composed in a similar tempo to her previous singles, "Bad Romance" features a spoken bridge and a full-throated chorus. The song was written by Gaga while touring and was inspired by German house-techno music. Lyrically it talks about being in love with one's best friend. Contemporary critics gave positive reviews of the song with the majority of them comparing the song to Gaga's second single "Poker Face". It has since reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, Irish Singles Chart, Canadian Hot 100 and the Swedish, German, Austrian and Danish charts, while peaking at number two in countries such as the United States, Australia and New Zealand. The accompanying music video takes place in a white bathhouse where Gaga is kidnapped by a group of supermodels who drug her and then sell her off to the Russian Mafia for sexual slavery. The video received positive response for its treatment and innovation with critics noting more its craziness and symbolic plot.
