The 1923–24 season was Cardiff City F.C.'s 3rd season in the Football League. They competed in the 22-team Division One, then the top tier of English football, finishing second. To date, the season also remains the highest position the club has achieved within The Football League.

Season review
Football League Second Division
Cardiff City began their season with wins over Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland at Ninian Park. The return fixture at Burnden Park proved a challenge, with Cardiff and Bolton drawing 1–1, but Sunderland lost 3-0 to the bluebirds, putting Cardiff top of the table. This followed by home wins over West Ham United and Newcastle United and draws with the same clubs away from home. Cardiff beat Chelsea 1–0, before having a double draw and then their first lost of the season against Preston North End. Cardiff bounced back to winning ways straight away with double victories against West Bromwich Albion. Manchester City then held Cardiff to draws both home and away. Before beating Nottingham Forest and Liverpool in the home and away fixtures. A Christmas Day encounter with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane resulted in a 1–1 draw, before defeating the Blades in the return game on boxing day. Aston Villa were the first club do the double over the Bluebirds, with a win over Middlesbrough in between. The next three games brought victory for Cardiff with two wins over Arsenal and one over Blackburn Rovers. Tottenham Hotspur were next and the clubs drew 1–1, the next game resulted in Cardiff dropping to 2nd for the first time in 17 games, Huddersfield beat them 2–0 the next four games all ended in defeats leaving Cardiff 4th. But within 6 games their 1st against with 3 wins and draws. After winning the next three games Cardiff were one point above Huddersfield with one game to go. Huddersfield beat their opponents who were Nottingham Forest, and Cardiff played Birmingham City at St Andrew's. In a goalless draw for most of the game, Cardiff were awarded a penalty and leading scorer Len Davies stepped up to take it, but missed and the game resulted in a goalless draw meaning Cardiff wouldn't win the title and would instead finish as runners-up.

FA Cup
Cardiff began their FA Cup campaign against Gillingham at Ninian Park, the clubs drew 0-0 resulting in a replay at Priestfield Stadium were Cardiff won 2–0. In the 2nd and 3rd, Cardiff beat Arsenal and Severnside rivals Bristol City respectively. This resulted in a 4th Round tie with Manchester City, where Cardiff drew 0–0 at Maine Road, but they lost in the replay, knocking them out of the competition.
Welsh Cup
Entering the competition in the fourth round, beating Shrewsbury Town, Cardiff were eliminated in the fifth round, losing to Newport County after the tie went to a third replay to decide the outcome.[1]
