On January 21, 2023, a mass shooting occurred in Monterey Park, California, United States. Ten people were killed, and ten others were injured.[3] The shooting happened after a Lunar New Year celebration at Star Ballroom Dance Studio near the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue and the Garfield Avenue intersection, at about 10:22 p.m. PST (UTC-8).[1][4] The gunman, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a standoff with Torrance police the next day, was identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran. It is the deadliest mass shooting in the history of Los Angeles County.[5][6][7]

Background

Monterey Park, in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, lies about 7 miles (11 km) east of downtown Los Angeles. A Chinese enclave, it became the first city in the mainland United States with a majority of residents of Asian descent (currently at 65%).[3][8] Tens of thousands of people had gathered on January 21, Lunar New Year's Eve, for the start of the two-day festival,[3][9] one of the largest celebrations in Southern California.[5] The festival was scheduled to halt at 9:00 p.m. that day and continue the next day. The dance studio, which held its own Lunar New Year Eve celebration, was not part of the festival.[10]

Events

Monterey Park shooting

Gunfire was reported at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, a Chinese-owned studio near the 100 block of West Garvey Avenue and the Garfield Avenue intersection at 10:22 p.m.[1][5][11] The gunman fled the scene. Responding police officers found "individuals pouring out of the location" when they arrived. Ten people were taken to local hospitals.[11][12] Police did not specify what type of weapon was used, but according to a reporter, the gunman used a "semi-automatic pistol".[12] Sheriff Robert Luna described the gunman as a male Asian wearing a black leather jacket, a black-and-white beanie, and glasses.[13]

An unnamed witness to the shooting told the media that the gunman "found his wife there" in the dance studio and then began "shooting everybody" in the ballroom, shooting some victims again while walking around.[14]

Alhambra incident

A second incident occurred approximately 17 minutes after the Monterey Park shooting, and 3 miles (4.8 km) away, in Alhambra. A gunman entered the Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio on South Garfield Avenue. According to Sheriff Robert Luna of Los Angeles County,[15] "two community members" at the ballroom wrestled the firearm, later described as an Cobray M11 9mm semi-automatic assault pistol with a high-capacity magazine attached to it,[16] away from him with no injuries occurring. However, Brandon Tsay, the owner of the ballroom, claimed that he alone fended off the gunman.[15] Afterwards, the gunman fled in a white late-1990s Chevrolet Express 3500 cargo van.[17][18][19][20] The gunman in that incident was later identified as the same one responsible for the Monterey Park shooting.[20]

Gunman's suicide

Nearly 22 miles (35 km) away from the second attempted shooting site in Alhambra,[5] police surrounded a van matching the description at a parking lot in Torrance, near the intersections of Sepulveda and Hawthorne boulevards.[3] The van's license plates appeared to be stolen. As officers approached the van, they heard a single gunshot coming from inside.[21] The driver was found slumped over the steering wheel, having died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.[2] He was identified as the gunman responsible for both the Monterey Park shooting and the Alhambra incident.[3][22]

Victims

Ten people, comprising five men and five women, were killed in the shooting. Another ten other people were injured, with seven of them remaining hospitalized as of January 22, some in critical condition.[21]

Perpetrator

The gunman was identified as 72-year-old Huu Can Tran (1950 – January 22, 2023), who was an immigrant from China. He met his former wife about two decades prior to the shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, where he gave informal lessons and was a regular patron. They filed for divorce in 2005. In 2013, Tran sold his San Gabriel home, which was a five-minute drive away from the ballroom.[23] At the time of the shooting, he was a resident of a senior community at a mobile home park in Hemet,[3][24] a suburb about 85 miles (137 km) east of Los Angeles. He bought the home in 2020.[23]

Reactions

During the manhunt for the gunman, President Joe Biden instructed the Federal Bureau of Investigation to provide full support to the local authorities.[3] He later offered his condolences and ordered flags at the White House to be flown at half-staff.[25] Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called the shooting "absolutely devastating", and Governor Gavin Newsom said that he was "monitoring the situation closely".[26]

The second day of Monterey Park's Lunar New Year festival was canceled "out of an abundance of caution and reverence for the victims", according to authorities.[4] In other major cities such as New York City, Miami, and Los Angeles, security preparations were stepped up ahead of their own Lunar New Year celebrations.[27]
