Alwarkurichi is a panchayat town in Tirunelveli district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

Location

Alwarkurichi is a small town 35 km or 45 Min travel from west of Tirunelveli town and 25 km from Tenkasi town. Located near western ghats (Ambasamudram - Tenkasi highway) surrounded by paddy fields, western ghats locate west of the town .The village has Gadananathi River on its east and rama river on its west

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[1] Alwarkurichi had a population of 9447. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Alwarkurichi has an average literacy rate of 71%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 56% of the males and 44% of females literate. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.

A temple for Paramakalyani Samedha Sivasailapathi is on the banks of Gadananathi River is at sivasailam village. There is also an ancient Shiva temple( Vanniappar temple )sivakami ambal sametha Vanniappar temple. Another aavudaiyambal sametha narasinganathar temple, alamelu manga sametha venkatachalapathy temple, sri boomi sametha aadhinathar temple. sivakami ambal sametha sivanthiappar temples are there. There was a temple dedicated to Alwars which is almost reduced to one mandapam. In the month of Tai during the Poosam theppotsavam is clelbrated for Sri Paramakalyani Samedha Sivasailapathi. In the month of April, (Last 11 days of Panguni) The rathotsavam is celebrated. In that 8th day Nataraja Abhishekam is performed by the family of Late Sri Anantharamakrishnan family. The Patchasathi to Lord Nataraja on that day is to be seen by all Bhaktas. Saastha Poosam Perumal Koil is situated at the merger point of Kadana river and Ramar Nathi. On Panguni Uthiram Pooja is celebrated in grand manner.

One of the famous temple for Sri mupidathi amman Kovil located in Sivasailam main road BSNL Exchange Opp. speciality of this temple, amman head is little tilt (almost 75 degree) which had happened due to hard prayer of the Siddhar. Villav Tree aged more than 200 years and having most powerful leaves ; one leave equivalent to hundred gold flowers as per Mythology.

There is an Azhwar temple which is the reason behind the name of the village (Azhwarkurichi).

There is another Kasi Visalakshi Sametha Kasi Viswanather temple on the banks of Gadananathi River that was constructed with Shiva Lingam brought from Kasi. This temple was constructed more than 200 years ago. This temple has special significance for being a Siddhar Peetam. A great mahaan and Siddha Purusha Shri RamaKrishna Yogeeswarar gave darshan in this temple in 18th century.
