Thepharak (Thai: เทพารักษ์) is a district (Amphoe) in the northwestern part of Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

History

Originally, Tambon Samnak Takhrau was part of Tambon Pan Chana, Dan Khun Thot district. On April 1, 1995 the Interior Ministry separated Tambon Samnak Takhrau, Nong Waeng and Bueng Prue to create the new minor district (King Amphoe) Samnak Takhrau.[1]

Luang Phau Khun, a monk of Wat Ban Rai, proposed to change the name to Theparak. As the minor district is located near the districts Thep Sathit and Si Thep. As both districts contain the word Thep meaning angel (Deva), the minor district is thus protected by angels. The government followed this suggestion and renamed to minor district to Theparak.

Following a decision of the Thai government on May 15, 2007, all of the 81 minor districts were to be upgraded to full districts.[2] With the publishing in the Royal Gazette on August 24 the upgrade became official.[3]

Geography

Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise) Thep Sathit and Bamnet Narong of Chaiyaphum Province, Dan Khun Thot of Nakhon Ratchasima Province and Lam Sonthi of Lopburi Province.

Administration

The district is subdivided into 4 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 58 villages (muban). There are no municipal (thesaban) areas and 4 Tambon administrative organizations (TAO).

2. Nong Waeng หนองแวง
3. Bueng Prue บึงปรือ
