He is notable for his run with S.L. Benfica winning the Portuguese Liga 3 times, and reached a Uefa champions Cup Final. His club career was Benfica (1983–1993), Boavista (1991-1992 Loan), Odivelas (1993–1994), Vitória Guimarães (1994–1996) and Tirsense (1996). He was nicknamed "O Menino" and "O Eterno Jovem" (The Boy/The Eternal Youngster), for his youthful appearance.
National team
In spite of being born in Guinea-Bissau, Samuel was a former Portuguese International. He represented the Portugal National Football Team on five occasions. His debut was against Austria, on September 4, 1991 in Estádio das Antas, Porto (Portugal 1 - 1 Austria).
