Benign hypertension or benign essential hypertension are historical terms that are considered misleading[1] and have fallen out of use (see history of hypertension). The terminology persists in the International Classification of Disease (ICD9) which dates from the 1970s, but is still used in the USA. ICD9 is due to be replaced in USA by ICD-10-CM on October 1, 2015.
