"Closer to Free" is a 1993 song by the band BoDeans featured on their fifth studio album, Go Slow Down. It is the band's biggest hit, having peaked at #16 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart after its re-release as a single in 1996, having drawn an audience among adult contemporary fans. It was featured as the theme of the TV series Party of Five, and was featured on the show's accompanying soundtrack. It also appeared in the opening credits of the 1995 film, Heavyweights. The song, "Closer To Free" having been adopted by Yale University's Smilow Cancer Hospital has been saturating the airwaves of Southern New England in their highly successful television ad about being cancer-free. The song describes the desire to be free to have a relationship with whomever one wishes.
