Despite travelling back to Australia to appear for Melbourne Victory in a preseason friendly against English giants Liverpool F.C. in front of 95,000 fans at the MCG where he was singled out for praise by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers,[6] just a few days later Pain made his senior national team debut against China in the final game of the tournament.[7]
