Dylan Kerr (born 14 January 1967 in Valletta) is a Maltese-born English former professional footballer. He played as a defender, specifically a left-back. In January 2014, he became an manager with V.League 1 club Hải Phòng.
Career
Kerr began his career at Sheffield Wednesday in 1984. He didn't make any league appearances for the club in his four years at Hillsborough, and left to join South African club Arcadia Shepherds in 1988.
A year later, Kerr returned to England to join Leeds United. He only made thirteen league appearances in his four years at Elland Road; however, he was also loaned out to two clubs: firstly Doncaster Rovers (with whom he scored his first League goal), then Blackpool. In his three-month spell at Blackpool in 1991–92, he scored one of the team's goals in a 5–2 victory over Lancashire rivals and eventual division champions Burnley at Bloomfield Road.
In 1993, Kerr moved to Mortimer Common and joined Reading, with whom he would make the most league appearances of his career: 89, including five goals. He was a member of the Royals' Division Two championship-winning side, and also when the club finished runners-up in the Division One the following season.
In 1996, Kerr signed for Scottish club Kilmarnock. He made 61 league appearances for Killie in four years. At the end of his first season with the club, he won the Scottish Cup. Not long after the Ibrox final, Kerr suffered a recurring groin injury that kept him on the sidelines for over a year.
Kerr was eventually released by Kilmarnock, and after one league game on loan to Carlisle United he joined Slough Town in October 2000.
In September 2000, Kerr briefly joined Kidderminster Harriers on trial, but his one-month contract was cancelled due to a claimed breach of club discipline.[1] He returned to Scotland, signing for Hamilton Academical in January 2001.[2]
Over the next three years, he played for Exeter City (on a three-month contract), Greenock Morton, Harrogate Town, East Stirlingshire and Hamilton Academical once again, before finishing his career with Scottish junior club Kilwinning Rangers in 2003.
After retiring, Kerr coached in the United States (specifically in Phoenix, Arizona). He then returned to Scotland, and worked as Argyll and Bute Council's Football Development Officer[3] between 2005 and 2009.
Kerr also worked extensively for the FA's of England,Scotland and N.Ireland and qualified for various UEFA badges.
In September 2009, Kerr signed a contract as an assistant manager at South African club Mpumalanga Black Aces[4] until June 2010. Working with Sammy Troughton over the next couple of years, Kerr got good coaching experience in Africa.
In 2011 Kerr became Academy Director and Assistant Coach for Khataco in Nha Trang, Vietnam, who were part of the VPL.
He then followed the franchise when it was sold to Hai Phong, assisting the Head Coach and being head of development for the younger players.
In 2012 Kerr was added as part of the Vietnamese National Team, Technical, for the Suzuki Cup, Asian Games, assisting the Technical bench and heading the Fitness programme.
In 2013 Kerr became Head a Coach of Hai Phong, leading them to FA Cup success in his first season, adored by the fans,for his style of play, Kerr decided not to renew his contract at the end of the season and left Hai Phong on a high.
In 2015 Kerr joined Tanzanian Giants Simba SC, a club renowned for its turnover of coaches, Kerr has become a fans favorite, guiding the team in the top three of the table under difficult circumstances.
His style of football has lifted the fans and the passing game he has introduced, has Simba earning rave reviews.
Kerr is a highly qualified, respected coach, popular wherever he has worked, he was recently added to the Reading "hall of fame" dedicated to past popular players.
