Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate
The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate is a non-profit educational institution founded in 2009 and named after Senator Ted Kennedy, who first envisioned it in 2003. The institute's mission is dedicated to educating the public about the important role of the Senate in our government, encouraging participatory democracy, invigorating civil discourse, and inspiring the next generation of citizens and leaders to engage in the civic life of their communities. In 2009, Peter Meade was named to lead the Institute.[1] In 2014, former University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Chancellor Jean MacCormack was named interim president. [2] The institute was dedicated by President Barack Obama on March 30, 2015 with Vice President Joseph Biden in attendance prior to its opening to the public on March 31, 2015.[3][needs update]
Location, design, and construction
The Institute is located on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Boston, near the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, on Columbia Point in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. The building was designed by Rafael Viñoly and will conform to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) specifications for sustainable building.[4] A groundbreaking ceremony was held on April 8, 2011.[5]
Kennedy house
In 2012, the institute announced that the Kennedy family has donated the main house of the historic Kennedy Compound to the EMK Institute. The institute also announced that educational seminars are to be held in the house and that the house itself will be opened to the general public at specific times as a memorial museum, dedicated to the Kennedy family.
