Elpidio Berrettari

Elpidio Berrettari (1552 – 1577) was a Pesciatine physician and author who died at the age of twenty-five. He founded the Academy of the Ombrosi in Pisa and wrote a treatise on laughter, which was printed in Florence by his brother Mario, at the press of Cosimo Giunti.[1][2]

  2. He left several manuscripts unpublished, among which one entitled de Risu and another de Fletu; the first of these was printed in 1603, with a dedication to Enea Varni, a gentleman from Imola; the other On Tears, which remained imperfect due to Berrettari's death, never saw the light.
