He was announced ineligible for the 2012 NCAA Tournament after seeding because of academic reasons. On July 5, 2012 the Boston Celtics announced that Melo was added to their roster for the 2012 Orlando Pro Summer League and the 2012 NBA Summer League.[6]
On November 14, 2012, Melo was assigned to the Maine Red Claws, Boston's team in the NBA D-League.[7] On December 10, 2012, Melo was recalled from the D-League back to the Boston Celtics.[8] Then on December 12, he was reassigned.[9]
On December 22, 2012, Melo registered a triple double against the Erie BayHawks. He finished the game with 15 points and 16 rebounds to go along with an NBA D-League record of 14 blocks.[10] He was recalled by the Celtics on January 29, 2013.[11] Melo made his NBA debut on February 1, 2013, recording one steal.[12] On February 6, 2013, Melo made his first NBA field goal in a 116–95 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.[13]
He was again assigned to the Red Claws on February 8, 2013[14] and recalled on February 10, 2013.[15] He was sent back for another assignment on March 1, 2013,[16] playing the first round of the D-League playoffs against eventual champions Rio Grande Valley Vipers. The Celtics recalled him on April 15, 2013,[17] and Melo participated in the regular season closer against the Toronto Raptors. It was only Melo's sixth game in the NBA.[18]
Following the 2012-13 season, Melo was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies for Donté Greene on August 15, 2013,[19] but was later waived on August 30.[20] The Dallas Mavericks signed him on September 10,[21] but again was ultimately waived on 22 October.[22] On January 22, 2014 he was acquired by the Maine Red Claws, later that day he was traded to the Texas Legends.[23]
