Hilary Caldwell (born March 13, 1991) is a Canadian competition swimmer from Victoria, British Columbia.[1] At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, she competed in the women's 200-metre backstroke, finishing in 18th place overall in the heats, failing to qualify for the semifinals. The next season at the 2013 World Aquatics Championships Caldwell swam to a surprise bronze medal in the 200-metre backstroke.[2] She set and broke the national record for the 200-metre backstroke in each of the qualifying, semifinal, and final rounds in the process. This broke teammate Sinead Russell's record who finished seventh in the same event. Caldwell had teamed up with noted West Coast coach Randy Bennett in Victoria during 2009, he also coached Canadian Olympic medalist Ryan Cochrane. This move was credited for her successful upturn and focus on the backstroke while being previously looked at as a competitor in the individual medley.[3]
