The inauguration of Franklin Pierce as the 14th President of the United States took place on Friday, March 4, 1853. The inauguration marked the commencement of the four-year term of Franklin Pierce as President and the partial term of William R. King as Vice President. Pierce affirmed the oath of office as President of the United States on the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol, with Chief Justice Roger B. Taney administering. Pierce was the only President to affirm the oath rather than swear it; he was also the first president to recite his speech from memory. The incoming Vice President, William King, was in Cuba at the time, as he was severely ill (he died the following month) and was attempting to recover in a warmer climate (it was a snowy day during the inauguration).[1]
