Washington Redskins
Reed was drafted in the third round, 85th overall pick, by the Washington Redskins in the 2013 NFL Draft.[4] On May 24, 2013, he officially signed a four-year contract with the team.[5] In the Week 2 game against the Green Bay Packers, he would record his first career touchdown, making him the first Redskins rookie to score a touchdown within the first two games of his career since retired tight end Chris Cooley in 2004.[6] On October 20, in a 45-41 win over the Chicago Bears, Reed recorded nine receptions for 134 yards and one touchdown, setting a new Redskins franchise record for receiving yards by a rookie tight end, as well as recording his first 100-plus yard game.[7] In Week 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles, Reed was pulled out of the game early after suffering a concussion. After missing four consecutive games due to headaches after the concussion,[8] he was placed on injured reserve on December 19.[9] Despite playing only nine games, with four starts, in his first season, Reed was named to Pro Football Weekly/Pro Football Writers of America all-rookie team.[10]
Reed would have a breakout season in 2015.[11] In the Week 7 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he recorded a career single-game high of 11 receptions, as well as 72 yards and two touchdowns.[12] He would have another two touchdown game in the 47-14 win against the New Orleans Saints.[13] Reed was pivotal in helping the Redskins claim the NFC East Championship in the team's Week 15 win against the Philadelphia Eagles, where he recorded 129 yards off of nine receptions and two touchdowns.[14] In his first playoff game, Reed recorded nine passes for 120 yard and one touchdown against the Green Bay Packers.[15]
On May 5, 2016, Reed signed a five-year contract extension, worth $50 million, including $22 million guaranteed.[16]
