The Journal of the San Juan Islands, also known as the San Juan Journal, is a weekly newspaper based in Friday Harbor, Washington.
The Journal was founded by businessman Oscar G. Wall, with the first issue appearing on September 13, 1906.[1] Originally named the Friday Harbor Journal,[2] the paper was intended to compete with the San Juan Islander, which folded in 1914.[3] It was later bought by editor Virgil Frits, who owned it until 1958.[4]
In 2000, the Journal became involved in the scandal surrounding Conrad Black's newspaper group. At that time the Journal was owned by Hollinger International, which Black and his associate David Radler controlled. Black and Radler arranged for Hollinger to sell the Journal, together with the Skagit Valley Argus, to Horizon Publications, a company which they secretly owned, for the sum of $1.[5] Horizon resold the Journal the following year to Black Press (an unrelated firm) for $280,000.[6] The directors of Hollinger were not informed of a previous third party offer of $750,000 for the Journal alone.[7]
During 2014, the Journal received 17 awards from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association.[1]
