Lassonde Industries Inc. (TSXLAS.A), is a Quebec agri-food company located in Rougemont and Montérégie, with operations throughout North America.

Activities

Lassonde Industries develops, produces, and markets a wide range of ready-to-drink fruit and vegetable juices and drinks. It also develops, produces, and markets specialized food products including fondue broths and sauces, soups, sauces, packaged corn on the cob, bruschetta toppings, tapenades, pestos, and pizza and pasta sauces. Finally, the company imports, packages, and markets wine from various countries, as well as apple cider and other wine-based beverages.

History

1918: The company launches in Rougemont as a vegetable cannery.[2][3]

1959: The company’s focus shifts towards the production of apple juice.[4][5]

1970: The company expands its operations through the production of fruit drinks.[6]

1977: Lassonde acquires part of Coopérative Montérégienne, another Rougemont apple juice producer, to increase production capacity.[7]

1981: Acquisition of Produits Ronald in Saint-Damase, Quebec, a company specializing in the processing of corn on the cob.[3]

1982: Creation of the Lassonde Industries holding company by Pierre-Paul Lassonde, Chairman of the Board, and Jean-Paul Barré, President.[3][6]

1987: Lassonde Industries becomes a public company, listed on the Montreal Stock Exchange.[7] Acquisition of Montreal-based food brokerage firm Effex Marketing Inc., which becomes the company’s sales force.[6]

1991: Acquisition of the juice and beverage unit of Cobi Foods Inc. in Nova Scotia, subsequently renamed Greatvalley Juices Inc.[6]

1993: Acquisition of Orange Maison Inc., a Montreal company specializing in the production of refrigerated fruit juices and drinks.[7]

1996: Acquisition of certain of the assets of Mar-Brite Foods Co-operative Inc., located in Ruthven in Southeastern Ontario. Production is focused on apple and tomato juice. The company is renamed Lassonde Juices Inc.[8]

2001: Lassonde Industries subsidiary A. Lassonde Inc. signs a licensing agreement for Eastern Canada with California-based Sunkist Growers Inc. for the processing and distribution of Sunkist® brand ready-to-drink juices and fruit drinks.[9] Lassonde participates in the development of Tetra Pak products, becoming the first North American company to use the Tetra Prisma®.[10] Lassonde is then given exclusivity on this technology for Quebec.[11]

2002: A. Lassonde Inc. acquires Golden Town Apple Products Ltd., a company located in Thornbury, Ontario and specialized in apple processing.[12]

2004: Lassonde Industries subsidiary Produits Ronald Inc. changes its name to Lassonde Specialties Inc.[13] A. Lassonde Inc. purchases Alfresh Beverages Canada Corp., a company specializing in fruit juices. Its best-known brands are: Everfresh, Sunlike, Fairlee, Tropical Grove, and Rich n’ Ready. The company is renamed Lassonde Beverages Canada and becomes a division of A. Lassonde Inc. The acquisition is made for $16.33 million, plus the value of inventory.[14]

2006: Lassonde Industries Inc. launches Arista Wines Inc., a new subsidiary specialized in the processing and distribution of imported wines.[11][15]

2007: A. Lassonde Inc. purchases assets for the production and marketing of ready-to-drink juice and fruit drinks from McCain Foods (Canada), a division of McCain Foods Limited. The purchase price was $14 million.[16][17] Lassonde Specialties Inc. purchases Les Produits alimentaires Mondiv inc., a plant in Boisbriand, Quebec, for $18.9 million. The plant, used to produce long-shelf-life specialty food products, is operated under the name Mondiv.[18]

2009: A. Lassonde Inc. purchases Apple Valley Juice Corporation, located in Clarksburg, Ontario, for $1.35 million.[19]

2011: In June 2011, Lassonde acquires Clement Pappas and Company for US$390 million. When the sale closes in August 2011, Lassonde holds 71% of stocks, the Lassonde family owns 10%, and the Pappas family owns 19%.[20]

2012: Sales reach $1,022.2 million in 2012, surpassing the billion dollar mark for the first time in company history.[21]

2014: On July 4, 2014, Lassonde Industries Inc. acquires Apple & Eve, an independent juice producer from Port Washington, New York, for $150 million.[22]
