List of political parties in Thailand

This article lists political parties in Thailand. Thailand had a multi-party system of government prior to the 2014 coup d'état.

Status of political parties before 2014

In coalition government

• Pheu Thai Party (For Thais Party; occupies 265 out of 500 seats in the House of Representatives of Thailand)
• Chartthaipattana Party (Thai Nation Development Party; 19 seats)
• Chart Pattana Puea Pandin Party (National Development Party for the Homeland; merger of Ruam Chat Pattana Party and Puea Pandin Party; 7 seats)
• Phalang Chon Party (7 seats)
• Mahachon Party (Great People's Party; 1 seat)
• New Democracy Party (1 seat)

In opposition

• Democrat Party (occupies 159 out of 500 seats in the House of Representatives of Thailand)
• Bhumjaithai Party (Proud Thais Party; 34 seats)
• Rak Thailand Party (Love Thailand Party, 4 seats)
• Matubhum Party (Motherland Party; 2 seats)
• Rak Santi Party (1 seat)

Parties not represented in parliament

• Social Action Party
• Pracharaj Party (Royalist People's Party)
• New Politics Party
• Thai Pen Thai Party (Thais are Free Party)
• New Aspiration Party, majority merged with the Thai Rak Thai party in 2001, minority continued
• New Force Party

Defunct parties

• Khana Ratsadon (existed from 1927 to the 1940s) – first political party in Thailand
• Socialist Party of Thailand (most members defected to the Communists in 1976. Thus the party was disbanded)
• Palang Dharma Party (collapsed in 1996)
• Liberal Democratic Party – merged into Thai Rak Thai in 1998
• Both of the following parties merged into Thais United National Development Party (Phak Ruam Jai Thai Chat Pattana) in 2007:
  • National Development Party (Phak Chat Pattana; founded in 2007)
  • Thais United (Ruam Jai Thai; founded in 2007)
• For the Motherland Party (Phak Pua Paendin; merged into the Chart Pattana Puea Pandin Party in 2011)

Banned parties

Parties dissolved by the Constitutional Court and barred from political activity:

• Communist Party of Thailand (existed from 1942 to the 1980s)
• Thai Rak Thai Party (Phak Thai Rak Thai) – dissolved by the Constitutional Court of Thailand on May 30, 2007 for violating electoral laws
• People's Power Party (Phak Palang Prachachon) – dissolved by the Constitutional Court of Thailand on December 2, 2008, for violating electoral laws
• Thai Nation Party (Phak Chart Thai) – dissolved by the Constitutional Court of Thailand on December 2, 2008, for violating electoral laws
• Neutral Democratic Party (Phak Matchima) – founded in 2006, dissolved by the Constitutional Court of Thailand on December 2, 2008, for violating electoral laws
