Market Village (Traditional Chinese: 城市廣場; Simplified Chinese: 城市广场) is a 325,000 square feet Chinese shopping mall in Markham, Ontario, Canada, just north of Toronto.[1] It was built by Cedarland Properties Limited in 1990. Back then, it mirrored a typical rural town in Ontario, such as by including a stable with live horses. That area of the building is now the food court.
The mall was threatened with new competition by the newer Pacific Mall, which was built on the location of Cullen Country Barns, but the two malls have co-existed ever since.
The mall has 9 buildings with only Buildings D and E as pedestrian mall (not indoor). Buildings A, B, D and F have 2 floors. There are 5 washrooms with 2 located on the second floor (and not wheelchair assessable).
Tenants
Most stores in Market Village are family-run stores, but there are a few non-Chinese retailers and some stores with links to Hong Kong have been opened. Some stores, along with these in Pacific Mall, have been targeted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for selling counterfeit DVDs,video games and CDs. There are over 170 stores and businesses around Market Village,[1] but the directory only provides 120.[2] Anchors in Market Village include the two supermarkets, a McDonald's restaurant, Bank of Montreal and an HSBC Bank.[2]

Future expansion
On June 15, 2006, Pacific Mall and Market Village announced plans for a major expansion to the south shopping complex in south Markham. An additional 400,000 square feet (37,000 m²) of retail space, a luxury hotel and a multi-level parking structure were to be built. The project was expected to begin in a year or two, and would bring the combined size of the two malls to about 1 million square feet (92,900 square meters).[3] However, that plan was delayed until late 2009, to open in the early 2010s.[4]
In 2009, plans were drawn up to demolish the entire mall and replace it with a larger and modern complex called the Remington Centre. It will feature a two level structure with over 800,000 square feet (74,000 m2) of retail and commercial space and two condo towers located on the southeast end. The Remington Centre is aiming for LEED status along with the installation of 1100 tonnes of geothermal capacity.[5] It is currently unknown when this mall will be closed. As of early 2015 only a few tenants have moved from the mall and remaining tenants have not shown any steps of pending closure of the mall. A model of the new mall complex is found by the entrance near HSBC.
