As of 2001[update] India census,[1] Mavilayi had a population of 11,953. Males constitute 47% of the population and females 53%. Mavilayi has an average literacy rate of 84%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 87%, and female literacy is 82%. In Mavilayi, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Maavila Kaavu near Maavilayi is an old feudal settlement in Kannur and is famous for annual celebrations of Adiyutsavam - a mock war festival. Renowned kerala communist leader A.K.Gopalan was born in Mavilayi
