"My Shot" is a song from Act 1 of the 2015 musical Hamilton. It was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Synopsis
Alexander Hamilton, Hercules Mulligan, John Laurens, and Marquis de Lafayette plot a rebellion against the British.
Analysis
Vibe said the backing is "reminiscent of the ’90s."[1] The tune is reprised during the song "Yorktown."[1] LA Times said the song had "Eminem combustion".[2] Vulture said the song reminded them of Eminem's "Lose Yourself."[3]
TapInto notes that this song becomes ironic by the end of the musical because Hamilton does, indeed, throw away his shot in the fatal duel with Aaron Burr.[4] Deadline notes “I am not throwing away my shot" becomes Hamilton's mantra.[5]
Critical reception
TapInto deemed it a "ferocious song".[4] Huffington Post suggests the song would make a good opening number to the musical.[6]
Popular culture
A Star Trek-centric spoof has been created entitled "My Spock".[7]
The song was one of many performed at the White House in March 2016.
