New Caney High School is a public secondary school in New Caney, an unincorporated section of Montgomery County, Texas and is part of the New Caney Independent School District. NCHS serves the cities of Roman Forest and Woodbranch, New Caney, and a portion of Porter, an unincorporated community.[2] Until 2010 it served a portion of Porter Heights, the rest of Porter, and the Montgomery County portion of Houston (near Kingwood), both of which are now served by Porter High School.[2][3]
NCHS is currently a 5A school with a student body of more than 1,600. The school has received recognition for its JROTC program, band, journalism program, DECA program and Academic Decathlon team.
History
The school was originally housed in what is now the New Caney Middle School. A fire in 1987 destroyed much of the campus. A new campus was built at the current site. The old site on U.S. Highway 59 was rebuilt and became home to several schools in NCISD at different times.
In the early 2000s, the New Caney High School Ninth Grade Annex was opened.
In 2008 the University Interscholastic League switched New Caney from District 21-4A to District 14-5A. NCHS also received a ranking of 121 out of 145 in an assessment released by the Houston Chronicle rating high schools in the Houston area.[4] In an article announcing the winner of the newspaper's inaugural Chronicle Cup, which ranked local high schools in terms of athletic achievement, New Caney High School was listed as "bringing up the rear".[5] Since 2008 New Caney has experienced a lot of success athletically. Boys Soccer has been to the playoffs the past four years under the leadership of Coach Cardenas. [6]
