Peerio is a cloud-based encrypted communications suite developed by Nadim Kobeissi and Florencia Herra-Vega and released on 14 January 2015.[1][2]
Features
Peerio is a free application, available for Android, Apple iOS, Windows, Mac, Linux, and as a Google Chrome extension.[3][4] It offers end-to-end encryption, which is enabled by default. The encryption uses the miniLock open-source security standard, which was also developed by Kobeissi.[5] The intent behind Peerio is to provide a security program that is easier to use than the current PGP standard.[6]
Peerio was audited by the German security firm Cure53, which found only non-security related bugs, all of which have since been fixed. [2]
Controversy
In January 2016 co-founder Nadim Kobeissi tweeted his reasons for leaving Peerio. These centered around potential plans to sell backdoored versions of the Peerio software to certain clients. Peerio soon denied the claims on their own blog, citing discussions of multiple party authentication systems (see: Shamir's Secret Sharing) as the subject of the controversy.[7]
