The Military of Australia, officially known as the Australian Defence Force (ADF) since 1976, consists of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The Australian Department of Defence administers the Australian Defence Organisation (ADO) which consists of the ADF and the civilian personnel supporting the ADF. Approximately 53,000 men and women serve in the ADF with another 21,600 serving in the three reserve components. The ADF is constituted under the Executive Government sections of the Australian Constitution, Section 68, that says, "The command in chief of the naval and military forces of the Commonwealth is vested in the Governor-General as the Queen's representative." In practice, the control of the ADF is, politically, vested in the Minister for Defence and several subordinate ministers. The Minister acts on most matters alone, however, important matters are considered by the National Security Committee of Cabinet. The Minister then advises the Governor-General who acts as advised in the normal form of executive government. The current Chief of the Australian Defence Force is General David Hurley. The Military history of Australia covers a period of around 200 years starting with the colonisation of Australia by the British in 1788. Australians have fought in nearly every major war of the 20th Century including the Second Boer War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War as well as numerous UN peace-keeping missions. More about the Australian military... 125px The Battle of Leyte Gulf was a naval battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, fought in the seas around the island of Leyte in the Philippines from October 23 to October 26, 1944. The Japanese intended to repel or destroy the Allied invasion of Leyte. Instead, the Allied navies inflicted a major defeat on the outnumbered Imperial Japanese Navy which finished it as a strategic force in the Pacific War. The battle is often considered to be the largest naval battle in history. Leyte Gulf was also the scene of the first use of kamikaze aircraft by the Japanese. The Australian heavy cruiser HMAS Australia was hit on 21 October, and organized suicide attacks by the "Special Attack Force" began on 25 October. In total Australia contributed around 10 warships and No. 10 Group RAAF which conducted ground attacks in the Southern Philippines. Lieutenant General Henry Gordon Bennett CB, CMG, DSO (16 April 1887 – 1 August 1962) was an Australian soldier who served in both World War I and World War II. Bennett (who was always known as Gordon) was born in Melbourne and at 29 became at the time the youngest Australian general. Despite his highly decorated achievements during World War I, including at Gallipoli, Bennett is best remembered for his role in the Fall of Singapore during the Pacific War when, as commander of the 8th Division, he escaped while his men became prisoners of the Japanese. HMAS Diamantina on display as a museum ship The first HMAS Diamantina was a River class frigate built by Walkers Limited at Maryborough, Queensland and commissioned in April 1945. Diamantina paid off to reserve on 9 August 1946, but was recommissioned as an oceanographic survey ship on 22 June 1959. As an oceanographic survey ship Diamantina was responsible for discovering the deepest point in the Indian Ocean in 1961, which was named Diamantina Trench. HMAS Diamantina paid off again on 29 February 1980, and was the last World War II-era frigate to serve with the Royal Australian Navy. Diamantina was handed over to the Queensland Maritime Museum Association and is currently on display in a dry dock adjacent to the Museum. Template:/box-footer 150px The CAC Wackett trainer was the first in house designed aircraft from the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation of Australia. The name was derived from its designer Lawrence Wackett. It entered service in March 1941 with 200 being delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force by 1942. It was a tandem seat monoplane training aircraft of steel tube and fabric construction with a Warner Scarab radial engine and a Hamilton two bladed propeller.
