Sindhu Joy is an Indian politician from the state of Kerala. She was the All India Vice-President of SFI, which is a prominent students' organisation in Kerala.[1] Sindhu Joy is the only female State President of SFI in the history of Kerala. She was the President of SFI Kerala State committee for more than three years.[2] Sindhu Joy has contested for the post of Member of the Legislative Assemblyof Kerala state as a Left Democratic Front candidate against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy from the Puthupally Assembly constituency in Kottayam district in 2006.[3] Sindhu Joy also contested for the post of Member of Parliament against Central Minister K. V. Thomas in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Ernakulam Constituency.[4]

Sindhu was a full-time member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from 1992 to 2011, until her resignation on 24 March 2011. After resigning from CPI(M), she joined Indian National Congress[5] and became the Chairperson of Kerala State Youth Commission. Later she resigned from the post and is now taking a short break from politics.[6]She participated in a popular Malayalam reality show Malayalee House(Malayalam version of Bigg Boss) and became one among the three finalists.[7]

Education

Sindhu Joy completed her schooling from St.Mary's Convent EMHSS Ernakulam and St. Joseph's Convent EMHSS, Thrikkakara (St.Joseph's of the Woods). She completed her B.A. from Maharaja's College, Ernakulam. Sindhu completed her B.Ed from St.Joseph's Training College, Ernakulam and completed M.Phil, Ph.D and Post Doctoral Research from Kerala University. Sindhu also hold a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and a Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Ernakulam and CHPS Software Solutions, Ernakulam respectively.[8]

Personal life

Sindhu was born to proprietor of Royal Builders, Late George Joseph Chakkungal (Joy) and Late Laila Joseph Veeramana. She is unmarried.[9]

Political career

Sindhu was a very prominent Students Federation of India leader who started her political career, while she was pursuing her Bachelor's Degree in Arts and subsequently her Masters Degree in Arts at Maharaja's College, Ernakulam.

She was the national Vice-President of SFI. Sindhu Joy was the only female president in the history of SFI Kerala State Committee. She was re-elected to the post and was the President of SFI Kerala State committee for more than three years.[10]

Sindhu Joy has led numerous protests in Kerala on various educational issues. In 2004, she was jailed for 30 days while leading a protest against attack of media persons in the Calicut Airport. In 2005, she was badly hurt after a grenade was hurled by police at a protest she led against the commercialization of the professional education sector, near the Government Engineering College in Trivandrum.[11]

Sindhu Joy has contested for the post of Member of Legislative Assembly of Kerala State as a Left Democratic Front Candidate against Chief Minister Oommen Chandy from the Puthupally Assembly constituency in Kottayam district in 2006.[12]

Dr.Sindhu Joy also contested for the post of Member of Parliament against Central Minister K. V. Thomas in 2009 Lok Sabha elections from Ernakulam Constituency and lost by a margin of 11,790 votes.[13] She participated in a popular Malayalam reality show Malayalee House, and became one of the three finalists.
