His father, Cecile D. Barker, managed Sly & the Family Stone and Peaches & Herb, while co-producing “Midnight Train to Georgia” with his partner Tony Camillo.[citation needed] Later, he founded a successful aerospace company (OAO Corporation), which he later sold to Lockheed Martin, the world's largest defense contractor.[citation needed] Barker also founded OAO Technology Solutions, an information systems company, which he took public via an IPO on the NASDAQ.[citation needed] He later moved his family to South Beach, Florida where he was one of the three partners who built the Royal Palm Hotel on Collins Avenue, and he founded or bought several restaurants and night clubs in South Beach, including Solid Gold, Club 320, and SoBe Live.[citation needed] Cecile D. At the age of 17, he landed a spot in MTV’s television program "Freestyle Battles," but never got to compete on air as he was too young.[citation needed] Determined to make his name as an MC, Stack$ spent the next few years taking homemade CDs to local radio stations and reciting verses on mixtapes.[citation needed] In 2004, Stack$ began working on his album, “CraZee and ConfuZed” after being signed by SoBe Entertainment/Warner Bros. $tacks is also the CEO of SoBe Entertainment.[citation needed]
