Take It from the Man! is the third album by American rock band The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It is the first of three critically acclaimed albums released by the band in 1996, preceding Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request and Thank God for Mental Illness. It was another change of style for the band, with a large influence being 1960s garage rock, particularly the early work of The Rolling Stones.[citation needed]

Writing and production

All of the songs were written by Anton Newcombe except "Oh Lord", "B.S.A.", "Cabin Fever" and "In My Life", which were written by Matt Hollywood. It was produced by Larry Thrasher of Psychic TV.

"Dawn" was later re-recorded on the band's first and only album with TVT Records, Strung Out in Heaven.

"Straight Up and Down" appears twice on the album (track 6 and 18), as two different takes. The long version of "Straight Up and Down," in particular, clearly indicates two of the band's biggest '60s influences, as by the final minutes of the song, the vocals mimic both the "Woo-woo!" backing vocals from The Rolling Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil," and the "Na-na-na-na!" vocals from The Beatles song "Hey Jude."

Legacy

"Straight Up and Down" was used as theme music for the television drama series Boardwalk Empire on the American cable network HBO.
