The King Alfred School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in Highbridge, Somerset, England. It serves Highbridge, Burnham-on-Sea and the surrounding villages. In 2007, the school celebrated its 50th anniversary.[1]
The school is associated with the King Alfred Sport Centre which is next to the school site.[2] There is some evidence of Roman remains under the school playing field.[3]
Academic performance
The Ofsted report in October 2012 rated the school as Good overall with Outstanding for Behaviour, Safety and Attitudes.[4]
In 2013, 60.3% of Year 11 pupils achieved five or more GCSE passes at grade A* to C including Mathematics and English, compared with 57.4% in the rest of Somerset and 60.1% nationally.[5] The school's value added score of 1007.4 placed the school at the 37th centile for progress nationally.
In 2012, 62% of Year 11 pupils achieved five or more GCSE passes at grade A* to C including Mathematics and English (Somerset - 56%; National - 58%). The school's value added score of 1017.7 placed the school at the 20th centile for progress nationally. In 2011, 68% of Year 11 pupils achieved five or more GCSE passes at grade A* to C including Mathematics and English (Somerset - 57%; National - 57%). The school's value added score of 1008.1 placed the school at the 35th centile for progress nationally.
In 2013 the A2 Level Average Points Score per Pupil was 765, compared with 744 in 2012 and 601 in 2011. In 2013 the A2 level Average Points Score per Entry was 206 compared with 193 in 2012 and 173 in 2011.
In 2013 the AS Level Average Points Score per Pupil was 297, compared with 270 in 2012 and 233 in 2011. In 2013 the A level Average Points Score per Entry was 186 compared with 175 in 2012 and 170 in 2011.
Notable former pupils
- 2013 World Champion BMX Champions and 2012 London Olympian Liam Phillips attended the King Alfred School. [6]
- Paralympian swimmer Anthony Stephens, the 200m Freestyle (S5) Gold Medal Winner at the 2006 IPC World Championships attended the King Alfred School. [7]
