The Long Home is an upcoming indie drama film directed by and starring James Franco, based on the novel of the same name by William Gay. It also stars Josh Hutcherson, Tim Blake Nelson, Courtney Love, Timothy Hutton, Giancarlo Esposito, Ashton Kutcher, Josh Hartnett, Zoe Levin, Analeigh Tipton, Scott Haze, and Robin Lord Taylor. The film follows a young contractor who is hired to build a "honky-tonk" in Tennessee by the man who killed his father.[1]

Plot

Set in rural 1940s Tennessee, a young man, Nathan Winer (Hutcherson), lands a job building a "honky-tonk" bar for a charismatic, scheming bootlegger, unaware that the man had murdered his father ten years earlier.

Pre-production

It was announced on April 6, 2015, that James Franco would direct, produce - through Rabbit Bandini Productions -, and star in the film adaption of the William Gay novel of the same name.[2] Robert Halmi Jr. and Jim Reeve are executive producing.[3]

It was revealed that The Long Home had been offered up to $288,355 in Ohio Film Tax Credits.[4]

Casting

On April 16, 2015, Franco posted on Instagram a list of The Long Home cast which included Josh Hutcherson, Timothy Hutton, Keegan Allen, Ashley Greene, Tim Blake Nelson, Jim Parrack, and Scott Haze.[5][6]

On May 1, 2015, it was officially announced that Tim Blake Nelson would collaborate with Franco for the seventh time as Hovington, a bootlegging patriarch,[1] and Josh Hutcherson would lead as Nathan Winer.[7] On May 4, 2015, Timothy Hutton[8] and Courtney Love[9] were cast along with Giancarlo Esposito who will play William Tell Oliver, "a Southern salt-of-the-earth man with a colorful, checkered life spent entirely within the confines of the country".[10] On May 5, 2015, several actors had signed on to the cast; Ashton Kutcher, Josh Hartnett, Zoe Levin who will play Amber Rose,[11] Analeigh Tipton, Scott Haze, and Robin Lord Taylor.[3]

Filming

On April 17, 2015, it was announced that filming would begin in Hamilton, Bulter County, and Cincinnati, Ohio.[12] On April 21, 2015, it was revealed that Franco also wanted to shoot part of the film in Eaton and Lebanon, Ohio.[13] A week later Franco was spotted scouting locations in Eaton.[14]

Principal photography began on May 1, 2015[4] in Hamilton[12] which coincided with filming of another Franco film, Goat, and were shot "pretty much simultaneously"[15] and then began in Eaton on May 17.[14] Production on the film wrapped on May 23, 2015,[16] with filming lasting 23 days.

Release

The Long Home is tentatively expected to be released in 2017.[6]
