Club career
Šunjić began his career with HŠK Zrinjski Mostar of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Premier League.
For the season 2010–11 he was loaned to Belgian Pro League outfit Kortrijk.[2] He didn't have a good season, failing to establish himself as a regular starter, so Kortrijk decided not to buy him, and he returned to Zrinjski for the first part of the 2011–12 season.[3]
In 2012, for the second part of the 2011–12 season, he joined Ukrainian club FC Zorya Luhansk.[4] There he established himself as a regular member of starting 11, earning his first international cap as a member of Zorya. His tenure at Ukrainian club lasted two and a half seasons.
On July 9, 2014, after two good performances at the World Cup, he signed a 3-year-deal with Russian club Kuban Krasnodar.[5]
On 27 August 2015 he moved to VfB Stuttgart, on a three-year deal.[6]
International career
Šunjić made his international debut for Bosnia and Herzegovina in a friendly against Wales in Llanelli on 15 August 2012 coming on as a second-half substitute.[7]
In June 2014, he was named in Bosnia and Herzegovina's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup[8] and played two matches against Nigeria and Iran.
After starting UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying strong, playing full 90 minutes in first three matches, he was given a red card against Israel in a 3–0 loss. Subsequently, he missed the next game against Andorra due to suspension, and not starting next two games, against Israel and Belgium.
