UEFA Euro 2016 Group D
Group D of UEFA Euro 2016 contains defending European champion Spain, Czech Republic, Turkey and Croatia. This Euro 2016 group is the only with two former European champions - Spain (3 times) and Czech Republic (1 time, as Czechoslovakia). Matches will be played from 12 to 21 June 2016.
Teams
Spain
Spain were winner Group C in qualification for UEFA Euro 2016, together with Ukraine, Slovakia, Belarus, Macedonia, and Luxembourg.[1]
Czech Republic
The Czech team, which was much changed from their disappointing World Cup campaign, was drawn into a tough group for qualifying, namely Group A, along with 2014 World Cup quarter-finalists the Netherlands, Turkey, Iceland, Latvia, and Kazakhstan.[2] The Czech team began with a win, defeating group favorites Netherlands 2–1, and followed up with victories over Turkey, Kazakhstan, and Iceland, leaving them as group leaders with maximum points after four matches. A draw at home against Latvia followed; nonetheless, the Czechs remained group leaders, and on September 6, 2015, the Czech Republic qualified for their sixth European Championship.
Turkey
Turkey were drawn in Group A in qualification for UEFA Euro 2016, together with Iceland, Latvia, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. The Turkish team qualified for their first major tournament in eight years as the best third-placed team after beating Iceland 1–0, with Selçuk İnan netting a free kick in the 89th minute. The last time the team qualified for the tournament, they finished 3rd by default after losing to Germany 3–2 with a last minute goal by Philipp Lahm.
Croatia
In the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, Croatia were drawn against Italy, Bulgaria, Norway, Azerbaijan and Malta. Following a goalless away draw against Azerbaijan and an away defeat to Norway, in early September 2015, the Executive Committee of the Croatian Football Federation unanimously decided to terminate Kovač's contract. On 21 September 2015, Ante Čačić was named as the head coach of the Croatian national team. On 13 October 2015, Croatia qualified for the finals by finishing as runners up in group H.
