UMFA was set up in 1985 by the All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU), Citizens Rights Preservation Committee (CRPC) and other religious / linguastic Minority People of Assam, as a response to the "Assam Agitation" of All Assam Students Union and the signing of the Assam Accord. The support of UMFA comes mainly from Bengali Muslims and Hindus.

The president of UMFA is MUIJ UDDIN MAHMUD who is a practicing lawyer of Gauhati High Court at Guwahati. He is a dedicated activist for Minority Rights in the State of Assam.

On 13 April 2013 State Executive Committee has been formed in State Level Conference held at Lengtisingha in the district of Bongaigaon, Assam. The UMFA contested in the Assembly and General Election-1985. The Party won 17 MLA and 1 MP seats respectively.
