A school (from Greek σχολεῖον - scholeion) is an institution designed to allow and encourage students (or "pupils") to learn, under the supervision of teachers. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is commonly compulsory. In these systems, students often progress through a series of schools: primary school, secondary school, and possibly a university, vocational school or a college. There are also non-governmental schools, called private or independent schools. A school may be dedicated to a particular field, such as a school of economics or a school of dance. Alternative schools and democratic education may provide nontraditional methods and curriculum, or no curriculum, as it were. In homeschooling and online schools, teaching and learning take place outside of a traditional school building. The use of the term school varies by country, as do the names of the various levels of education within the country. More about Schools... Minneapolis North High School overhead view taken by the United States Geological Survey North Community High School, or simply Minneapolis North, is a public, four-year high school located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The school has existed for over 120 years in several buildings all located on the North Side of Minneapolis. North once had a predominately Jewish student body but by 1982, the school and the neighborhood it is located in had become mostly black. Desegregation efforts, such as magnet school programs, have attempted to attract students from throughout Minneapolis and nearby suburbs. The neighborhood that North is located in is known for high levels of poverty and crime. In recent years the school has been known for its highly successful boys' and girls' basketball programs. Both teams have had numerous state tournament appearances and state championship titles. North offers several college preparatory classes and operates, Minneapolis Public Schools' radio station, KBEM-FM. The school has often struggled academically in terms of graduation rate and state standardized tests. The school's low academic performance has led to the school being labeled a "dropout factory" and suggestions by a Minneapolis City Council member to burn the school down. La Martiniere in Lucknow in 1858 La Martinière College is a premiere educational institution located in Lucknow, the capital of the Indian State of Uttar Pradesh. The College consists of two schools: La Martinière Boys' College was founded in 1845 and La Martinière Girls' College was established in 1869. The Boys' College is the only school in the world to have been awarded royal battle honours. He is best known for his time as Headmaster at Guildford Grammar School and later for the building of the Chapel of SS. Mary and George. Henn gained his BA in 1887 and MA in 1890 from Worcester College at Oxford University. He taught at various schools until 1900, when he became a missionary in Western Australia in country towns. After further religious work in regional WA, he moved to Guildford, Western Australia and became a leading force behind Guildford Grammar School's chapel and preparatory school.
